Within the framework of the project “STRONG TOGETHER – 2. СИЛЬНІ РАЗОМ – 2”, an exhibition-fair “Strong Together” has taken place

On December 16, 2023, within the framework of the project “STRONG TOGETHER – 2. СИЛЬНІ РАЗОМ – 2”, funded by the Society Integration Foundation, the exhibition-fair “Strong Together” was organized by Daugavpils University Association for Lifelong Learning, Cultural and Science Communication “Intellect Park”. The event involved the participation of 30 Ukrainian civilians registered on the cloud platform “MySkills”, showcasing their competencies, education, skills, hobbies, and interests, alongside the representatives of the host country.

During the fair, the Ukrainian civilians could demonstrate various handicrafts, their crafting techniques, and shared the stories behind the conception of these creations. Visitors of the exhibition-fair learned about the history of traditional Ukrainian crafts, various intricacies of craftsmanship, and how the authors developed their techniques. Enthusiasts had the opportunity not only to admire various items on display but also to purchase them.

The exhibition-fair presented a diverse array of handicrafts, ranging from items adorned with decorative Petrikivka paintings to skilfully crafted embroideries, beaded brooches, and candles made from wax. Some craftsmen showcased their sewn soft toys, while others presented paintings that not only involved traditional brushwork but also incorporated handcrafted wax elements. Latvian representative Lāsma Šembela introduced Latvian traditional crafts, including knitted mittens, scarves adorned with Latvian ethnographic symbols, knitted socks, beaded brooches, and various crocheted items. The event was attended by skilled craftsmen in creative crafts, who were experts in their respective fields and master craftsmen from both the Ukrainian and Latvian sides. They demonstrated their skills and engaged in networking, which is one way to initiate new entrepreneurial education initiatives.

The exhibition-fair was filled with a Christmas atmosphere, enhanced by the presence of mulled wine, warm tea, and informal conversations. Visitors of the fair exchanged information about opportunities to showcase their works in Latvia, participate in workshops, and explore the potential for creating a joint applied arts cluster. The attendees of the exhibition gained insights into Ukrainian traditions and culture. Meanwhile, Latvian participants shared information about Latvian handicraft traditions, thereby strengthening intercultural communication competency. Overall, the event fostered mutual collaboration among Ukrainian civilians and their integration into Latvia’s creative industries.

The project is financially supported by the Society Integration Foundation from the allocated funds of the Latvian state budget.

The content of the project activities is overseen by the Daugavpils University Association for Lifelong Learning, Cultural and Science Communication “Intellect Park”.
