Daugavpils University Lifelong Learning, Culture, and Science Communication Society “Park of Intellect”, participating in Small grants programme of the US Embassy in Latvia, has received financial support for the project “Building Understanding of Hate Speech and Its Prevention in the Latvian Civic Community”, ID No. SLG75024GR0075.
Project Title: “Building Understanding of Hate Speech and Its Prevention in the Latvian Civic Community”.
Project Outcomes:
-Workshop and structural discussions participants will familiarize themselves with the definition and characteristics of hate speech, analyze precedents of ethnic and political hate crimes in Latvia, learn how to identify, prevent, and address situations involving hate speech and hate crimes; during the workshop, they will participate in a debate game “Forms of Hate-Motivated Individual and Group Expressions”; and carry out practical work on “Identification of Hate Crimes, Examples of Linguistic Expertise”;
-Using criteria for identification of hate speech, workshop and structural discussions participants will evaluate examples prepared by experts;
-Upon completion of the workshop and structural discussion, participants will have completed a questionnaire developed by experts regarding attitudes towards manifestations of hate speech in Latvia;
-Applying the latest research, experts will develop workshop content with the inclusion of current precedents of hate speech encountered in Latvia, and provide recommendations to workshop participants regarding hate speech prevention;
-A research on aspects of hate speech, its precedents, and prevention in Latvia will be developed, along with recommendations for prevention of hate speech.
-Development of interactive teaching methodological materials.
-Based on the project research, a publication will be prepared and included in an internationally recognized database.
