In-person workshops – structured discussions within the framework of the project “Raising Awareness about Hate Speech and Its Prevention in Latvian Civil Society” have been conducted

On October 8 and 23, 2024, workshops – structural discussions within the project “Raising Awareness about Hate Speech and Its Prevention in Latvian Civil Society”, ID No. SLG75024GR0075, were held. These structured discussions were aimed at adult third-country nationals, Ukrainian civilians, and Latvian citizens, and were led by the project educator, Oļģerts Rihlickis.

Workshop participants were introduced to the definition and key characteristics of hate speech. Under the guidance of educator Oļģerts Rihlickis, examples of identifying, preventing, and addressing hate speech and hate crime situations were analyzed. Selected visual materials – images and videos – played a significant role in developing skills to identify hate speech scenarios.

During the workshops, participants engaged in a debate exercise titled “Forms of Hate-Motivated Expressions by Individuals and Groups”. The opinions expressed during the debates sparked discussions about the features of hate speech, respect, and tolerance toward diversity and differences in society. The sessions were conducted in a relaxed atmosphere, and the target audience acknowledged the value of addressing such a pressing topic and discussing several “uncomfortable” issues.

The next project workshops will be organized for youth and educators working with third-country nationals.

The project “Building Understanding of Hate Speech and Its Prevention in the Latvian Civic Community,” No. SLG75024GR0075, is being implemented with the financial support of the U.S. Embassy in Latvia.
